Keokuk County Public Health Celebrates Iowa Moms and Babies this August During National Breastfeeding Month
(Sigourney, Iowa) – Keokuk County Public Health is shining a spotlight on Iowa moms and babies to celebrate National Breastfeeding Month this August.
There are many benefits to breastfeeding. Breastmilk contains the perfect balance of nutrition and antibodies that provide immune support for Iowa’s youngest population. Babies who receive breastmilk have a lower risk of asthma, obesity, type 1 diabetes, SIDS, and ear infections.1 While breastmilk benefits for babies are more commonly known, there are also benefits for moms including a lower risk for high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and ovarian and breast cancers. 1
While moms are aware of the benefits of breastfeeding, they can face barriers and struggles that make it difficult to achieve their breastfeeding goals. Successful breastfeeding takes the work of an entire community, not just those who work directly with moms and babies. When moms achieve their breastfeeding goals, the health benefits mom and baby get from breastfeeding results in lower health care costs and lower absenteeism rates from work.3
