The following tips will make your visit to the Keokuk County Household Hazardous Waste Facility more efficient:
- Leave materials in their original containers.
- Be prepared to show your driver's license.
- Be prepared to complete a short questionnaire concerning the products you are bringing to the Collection Center.
- Any unlabeled items will be accepted but an additional questionnaire may be required.
- Buy fewer disposable items to save money and resources.
- Recycle plastic shopping bags at stores.
- Shredded office paper should be bagged separately.
- Donate unwanted clothes, toys and household goods to a charitable organization or homeless shelter.
- Compost your kitchen and garden waste at home. This could reduce your waste by 25% and fertilize soil in your garden.
- Buy products that have less packaging.
- When shopping take your own reusable shopping bags.

Recycling/Trash Center Rules
- Everything MUST to be sorted BEFORE you arrive at the center.
- DO NOT get out of your vehicle to take recycling/trash inside the building – wait your turn to pull inside.
- It is a one-way driveway - DO NOT turn around and pull out the same way you came in. YOU will be responsible if you cause an accident.
- Speed bumps are for safety purposes.
- When entering the center, pull in all the way to the exit door.
- Absolutely NO yard waste of any kind – we do not have a DNR permit allowing this type of waste.
- The City of Sigourney pays the county for city residents recycling use ONLY. You MUST use a Cox Landfill bag or tag to take your trash to the center. The tag MUST correlate with the correct bag size. These bags are sold ONLY at the center. Individual bags/tags are NOT sold.
- Household waste is what is generated WITHIN the home you LIVE in and must be paid for and placed in a Cox bag to bring to the center. Kleenex and toilet paper are household waste and NOT recyclable.
- NO truck or trailer loads are allowed of any kind – trash, recyclables, cardboard, plastic, etc.
- This center is NOT equipped as a landfill. All furniture, construction waste, excessive bags of trash, etc. MUST be taken to the landfill near Richland, Iowa or optionally rent a dumpster.

Recyclable Items
- Plastic - Any clear plastic bottle of container with the numbers "1,2,4,5,7" are recyclable. Must be rinsed clean and lids removed. Colored plastic goes in the trash.
- Glass - All clear FOOD container bottles and jars. Please rinse. Colored glass is trash.
- Metal - Aluminium foil, tin cans, and pie tins, can lids, etc. Please rinse.
- Aerosol cans are recyclable ONLY IF they are completely empty.
- Paper Materials - Newspaper, magazines, books, junk mail, shredded paper, and cardboard can all go together.
- Cardboard - Pizza, cake, cereal, cracker, shoe, storage, etc. boxes ARE recyclable. Cardboard boxes of bags with wax on the outside of them are trash.
- White Paper - Computer paper, plain white paper must be kept separate from other paper.
NOT Recyclable
- Straws, styrofoam, wrappers of any kind, cat/dog food bags, waxed cardboard, grocery bags, colored glass, colored plastic, salt pellet bags, motor oil quart/jugs, any plastic bottles with the numbers "3 or 6".
- Liquid paint, varnish, hazardous chemical, Antifreeze are not acceptable material.
- Kleenex and toilet paper are household waste and NOT recyclable.

Automotive Products: antifreeze, brake fluid, cleaners, degreasers, fuels, motor oil, oil filters, waxes, windshield washer fluid

Though not hazardous, this can be reused. -
Household Pesticides: weed killers, bug killers, fungicides

Note: Latex paint can be dumped on newspaper and left to dry, then it can go in the garbage. -
